Puppy Rescued from Trash Bag Near Morgan Road in Battle Creek |
Local Resident's Quick Action Saves Malnourished Puppy Found Abandoned |
A young puppy is currently receiving critical medical care after being discovered suffocating inside a tied-off trash bag near Morgan Road in Battle Creek.
Early Wednesday morning, around 6:30 a.m., Battle Creek resident Sarah Wood was driving along East Avenue N and Morgan Road when she heard distressing cries. Upon investigating, she found the puppy abandoned in a sealed garbage bag.
"I was approaching the stop sign when I heard the puppy screaming and crying," Wood recounted. "I want to know who did this, like who would do this to an innocent puppy."
Wood promptly contacted All Species Kinship (A.S.K.), a local non-profit rescue organization. The puppy was immediately transported to a nearby veterinary hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
"We don't think this dog had many more hours, maybe not even an hour left to survive," said Sophia DiPietro, A.S.K.'s executive director. "He was terribly malnourished, dehydrated, suffering from heat stroke."
Upon arrival, the puppy was found covered in fly larvae and has been experiencing intermittent seizures. DiPietro suspects the presence of fly larvae indicates the puppy had been left outside in the garbage bag for several hours.
"It's obvious that this puppy was kept in filth and badly neglected prior to being dumped in the garbage bag," DiPietro added.
As of Thursday afternoon, the puppy is showing signs of improvement. However, he is still having trouble standing and has lost most of his eyesight.
No suspects have been identified, but a police report has been filed with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.
"We are doing all we can and are hoping for the best," DiPietro stated.
Wood remains hopeful for the puppy's recovery and has expressed her intention to adopt him if he survives.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by animal rescue organizations in the region. Local shelters, such as the Calhoun County Animal Center, are dedicated to providing care for abandoned and neglected animals. Community support through donations and volunteer work is crucial to their mission.
In recent months, the Battle Creek community has rallied to support local animal rescues. Events like the Family Farm and Home adoption event in June 2025 have helped raise awareness and find homes for many animals in need.
Residents are encouraged to report any instances of animal neglect or abandonment to local authorities and support local shelters through donations or volunteering. |
