Federal impasse leads to service disruptions at popular Michigan national lakeshore |
EMPIRE, MI â The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has shuttered its visitor center and suspended ranger-led programs due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
For the first time in six years, a deadlock in Congress has resulted in a government shutdown, leaving both Republicans and Democrats at an impasse.
Despite the closure of the visitor center, the park's main attractions, including the Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, and various hiking trails and beaches, remain accessible to the public.
Campgrounds such as D.H. Day and Platte River continue operations, funded by visitor fees rather than congressional appropriations.
However, amenities like restrooms and trash collection services are not being maintained during the shutdown.
Educational programs, particularly those for school groups, are on hold, affecting numerous students who typically visit during the fall months.
Nonprofit partners, including the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, have also suspended volunteer activities due to the furlough of supervising park staff.
Executive Director Laura Ann Johnson expressed hope for a swift resolution, emphasizing the organization's commitment to supporting the national lakeshore.
While law enforcement rangers remain on duty to ensure visitor safety, the absence of full staffing raises concerns about the park's upkeep and the overall visitor experience during this period.
Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and stay informed about the status of park facilities and services. |
