18-Year-Old Faces Multiple Charges Following Battle Creek Incident |
Battle Creek, Mich. â An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with an off-campus shooting that led to multiple school lockdowns earlier this week.
Diondre Sanders Jr. faces charges including assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm possession, carrying with unlawful intent, discharge from a vehicle, and carrying a concealed weapon.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon near Battle Creek Central High School (BCCHS).
A verbal altercation between a group in a vehicle and two students on foot, aged 15 and 16, escalated, resulting in multiple gunshots.
A student bystander was struck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
According to court documents, Sanders was in a black Dodge truck during the incident.
Initially, he denied being present but later claimed his younger brother fired the gun.
His bond is set at $50,000 cash surety.
In response to the shooting, Ann J. Kellogg Elementary School, BCCHS, and BC STEM were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
These lockdowns have since been lifted.
Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "Weâre doing everything we can to protect our kids and our community, and to ensure those responsible are held fully accountable."
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Carter of Battle Creek Public Schools added, "Community conflicts that spill into areas near our schools have a lasting impact on our students, creating fear and emotional harm."
