Tom Izzo's $1 Million Raise Elevates Him to Highest-Paid Coach in Big Ten

Michigan State's Board of Trustees Approves Salary Increase, Recognizing Izzo's Hall of Fame Legacy

Michigan State University's Board of Trustees has approved a $1 million raise for Tom Izzo, elevating his annual salary to approximately $7.2 million and making him the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten.

This decision underscores the university's commitment to Izzo's Hall of Fame legacy and the continued success of the Spartans' basketball program.

Now in his 31st season, the 70-year-old Izzo has led the Spartans to eight Final Four appearances and secured the 2000 national championship.

Under his leadership, Michigan State has achieved 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, boasting a 745-303 record without a single losing season.

University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz praised Izzo, stating, "Coach Izzo is the ultimate Spartan, someone whose work ethic and devotion to our student-athletes, this university, and the broader MSU community are unmatched."

He added, "We believe deeply in his ability to uphold our values, develop champions, and continue building one of college basketball’s premier programs."

Athletic Director J Batt echoed these sentiments, highlighting Izzo's profound impact on student-athletes and the Spartan community.

Izzo expressed his gratitude, saying, "I'm incredibly appreciative of the continued support from the Board of Trustees, President Guskiewicz, and AD Batt."

He continued, "With strong leadership and positive momentum throughout the University ... ."

In comparison, Kansas coach Bill Self has a similar contract structure, with a lifetime contract announced two years ago and an annual salary exceeding $10 million.

Self, in his 21st season with the Jayhawks, has led them to four Final Fours and two championships.

Izzo's raise not only reflects his remarkable achievements but also signals Michigan State's dedication to maintaining excellence in its basketball program.

As the Spartans continue their season, currently ranked ninth with an 8-1 record, the university community looks forward to building upon this legacy of success.
