Trump Shares Misleading Video Alleging $5 Billion Money Laundering in Michigan Budget

Former President Amplifies Unsubstantiated Claims Amid Ongoing Budget Negotiations

On Monday, former President Donald Trump shared a video accusing Michigan Democrats of "laundering" $5 billion in taxpayer funds within the state's budget. The video, produced by media personality Christina Aguayo, alleges that House Republicans uncovered a fraudulent scheme involving over 4,000 fictitious jobs, with funds purportedly redirected to controversial expenditures.

Aguayo claims these funds were misused for "questionable gender surgeries for prisoners," "dubious" arts and culture grants, and non-existent programs. She asserts that House GOP investigators identified thousands of fake positions created to justify budget allocations that never resulted in actual employment. Critics argue this was a deliberate tactic to funnel public money back to Democrats, bypassing accountability and oversight.

However, these assertions misrepresent and conflate claims made by Michigan House Republicans. While House Speaker Matt Hall has highlighted the existence of 4,300 unfilled positions, the associated savings amount to approximately $750 million, not $5 billion. Hall stated that departments are retaining these funds, and the GOP budget proposal aims to eliminate this practice. There is no evidence to support the claim that these funds are being redirected to the alleged expenditures mentioned in the video.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel condemned Trump's post as a "blatant lie" and an attempt to distract from the Republican-proposed budget, which he claims defunds the police and ends free school meals. Hertel emphasized that Republicans are resorting to deception to pass an unpopular budget.

The controversy arises amid stalled budget negotiations between the Republican-led House, Democratic-led Senate, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Lawmakers face a September 30 deadline to finalize the 2025-2026 spending plan to prevent a government shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks expressed frustration over the distractions, emphasizing the urgency of completing the budget.

The House Republican budget proposal seeks to cut nearly every state department and agency budget, totaling $7.26 billion in reductions. These savings are intended to fund a $3.4 billion plan to repair the state's infrastructure. Hall has characterized the budget as eliminating $5 billion in waste, fraud, and abuse, redirecting funds to priorities like roads, public safety, and education.

As the budget deadline approaches, the dissemination of misleading information threatens to further complicate negotiations and erode public trust in the process.
