Whitmer Signs Order to Assess Tariff Impact on Michigan's Economy
Whitmer Signs Order to Assess Tariff Impact on Michigan's Economy Before Deadline |
Governor Whitmer initiates comprehensive review of tariffs' effects on key Michigan industries ahead of federal deadline. |
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive directive to evaluate the impact of federal tariffs on Michigan's economy, focusing on sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and the auto industry.
This action comes just before the August 1 deadline set by the Trump administration for countries to negotiate tariff rates to avoid taxes up to 50%.
In a statement, Whitmer highlighted that tariffs have already raised prices and weakened supply chains, affecting Michigan families and businesses.
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist expressed concerns about the auto industry, noting that major companies are losing money and that the supply chain, employing tens of thousands in Michigan, is also suffering.
Economists warn that these tariffs could lead to higher consumer prices, while President Donald Trump argues they will encourage domestic business and job creation.
Clarence Lloyd, vice president of Southwest Michigan First, voiced concerns about the uncertainty tariffs bring, stating that many regional businesses operate on thin margins and could be forced to close if costs rise.
Recently, the Trump administration announced a 90-day extension for negotiations with Mexico, delaying the implementation of new tariffs on some trading partners. |
