After the Storm — A Note from The Buzz

This past week has been tough for so many across Battle Creek and the surrounding areas. The recent tornadoes left a trail of downed trees, damaged homes, and shaken hearts. Like many of you, we lost power and internet — just getting it back late last night.

Personally, we had a tree come down on our roof, causing some structural damage. It’s nothing compared to what some of our neighbors are facing, and our hearts go out to everyone still dealing with the aftermath.

Because of the outages, this will be a short edition of The Battle Creek Buzz, but I didn’t want the week to pass without checking in and sharing some helpful resources for those tackling cleanup.

Here are three tree removal services getting good word-of-mouth in our area:

  • AFE Tree Service – (313) 702-5649

  • 911 Tree Experts – (269) 870-0632

  • Alpine Tree Service – (616) 696-8733

We’re wishing all of you a safe, speedy recovery. Here’s to coming together, helping each other, and getting back to enjoying a beautiful Battle Creek summer.

Atomic Habits – Chapters 2 & 3

Identity & Systems: The Real Key to Habit Change

As we move deeper into Atomic Habits, the concepts get even more powerful. Chapters 2 and 3 dig into two game-changing ideas: identity-based habits and the importance of systems over goals.

Chapter 2: Focus on Who, Not What
James Clear teaches that true behavior change starts with identity. Instead of saying, “I want to run a marathon,” shift your thinking to, “I am a runner.”
When you build habits that align with the type of person you want to become, your actions start to reinforce that identity—and that’s when habits really start to stick.

Chapter 3: Forget Goals—Build Systems
Clear argues that goals are helpful for setting direction, but it’s the systems—your daily actions and routines—that determine your progress. If your goal is to write a book, your system is your writing habit. When you focus on improving your system, results begin to take care of themselves.

These chapters remind us that meaningful change isn’t about doing more—it’s about becoming more.

Ticks in Michigan can spread diseases like Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.

To prevent tick bites, individuals are advised to wear long sleeves and pants, use insect repellent, and avoid tall grass and wooded areas.

After spending time outdoors, it is important to check for ticks on the body and pets.

If a tick is found, it should be removed carefully with tweezers.

Symptoms of tick-borne illnesses include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches.

It is recommended to seek medical attention if these symptoms occur after a tick bite.

Additionally, individuals should keep their yards well-maintained, as tall grass and brush can attract ticks.

Experts also suggest creating a barrier between wooded areas and yards using wood chips or gravel.

By taking precautions and staying vigilant, people can reduce their risk of being bitten by ticks and contracting diseases.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
The community was known as the House of David, and its leader was Benjamin Purnell. Founded in 1903, the House of David was a religious community that blended elements of Christianity with communal living, vegetarianism, and celibacy. Benjamin Purnell, a former Seventh-day Adventist preacher, established the community with his wife Mary where they emphasized self-sufficiency and agricultural practices. The House of David gained fame for its eclectic beliefs, distinctive bearded appearance of its male members, and its successful baseball team which toured the country in the early 20th century. However, Benjamin Purnell's leadership was marred by allegations of financial irregularities, sexual misconduct, and legal troubles, leading to the eventual dissolution of the community in the 1930s.
