Tragic accident claims life of 23-year-old man; no students involved |
A 23-year-old man from Battle Creek lost his life early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle near Lakeview Middle School.
The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. as the man was cycling westbound on West Columbia Avenue. A car, also traveling west, collided with him in front of the school.
Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) officers are investigating the crash. No charges have been filed at this time.
In a statement, BCPD expressed condolences: "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the individual involved in this tragic incident." They also urged the community to "stay alert and share the road safely."
Lakeview School District Superintendent Dr. William Patterson informed the community via email that the accident occurred during student arrival time but emphasized that no students were involved.
"Our hearts go out to the individual's loved ones and to everyone in our community affected by this tragedy," Patterson stated. He acknowledged the emotional impact on students and staff, encouraging them to seek support if needed.
Counselors and administrators are available at Lakeview Middle School to assist those affected.
As of 7 a.m., Calhoun County 911 reported road closures on West Columbia Avenue and South 31st Street due to the crash. The roads reopened by Tuesday afternoon.
In light of this incident, the community is reminded to exercise caution and vigilance on the roads, especially during school hours. |
