Swift action by deputies leads to arrest after early morning incident |
On Monday, July 14, 2025, at approximately 7:15 a.m., deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a break-in at a commercial establishment located in the 600 block of Avenue A in Springfield.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered evidence of forced entry and promptly secured the area. A comprehensive search of the premises was conducted with the assistance of a K9 unit; however, the suspect was not found inside the building.
Utilizing witness statements and surveillance footage provided by the business, deputies developed a description of the suspect. Shortly thereafter, an individual matching that description was spotted near the intersection of North Helmer Road and Bishop Road.
Deputies, along with the K9 and Drone Team and in collaboration with the Battle Creek Police Department, established a secondary perimeter in the area. The suspect was located and taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on burglary charges.
The suspect has been identified as a 46-year-old male from Battle Creek.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to community members who provided timely and helpful information, which played a key role in the swift apprehension of the suspect.
This case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Lt. Curtis Smith at 269-781-0880 or submit an anonymous tip through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
In recent months, Springfield has experienced a series of property crimes. For instance, on April 6, 2025, a burglary occurred at a local restaurant, resulting in significant damage and loss. Additionally, on March 27, 2025, severe vandalism at a downtown hotel led to its temporary closure. These incidents highlight the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to maintain public safety.
