Battle Creek Fire Department responds to late-night structure fire; investigation ongoing

Battle Creek, MI ... One person died in a house fire on Grenville Street late Wednesday night, April 22, 2026.
The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to the structure fire at approximately 10:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported the blaze.
Fire ResponseEngine 3 arrived to find fire coming from a first-floor window of a two-story home and immediately began advancing a hose line into the structure. Neighbors at the scene advised firefighters that two people may have been inside.
During operations, a resident exited an upstairs apartment and told crews that someone might still be inside the first-floor apartment. Truck 1 conducted a search of the main floor while Car 3 established command.
During fire suppression efforts, firefighters located a victim on the first floor who had died.
Scene Control and SupportThe Battle Creek Police Department assisted with scene control, and LifeCare Ambulance was on scene to provide support.
Rescue 2 conducted a thorough search of the second floor, and additional units assisted with support functions. The fire was extinguished quickly, and major damage was confined to one area of the structure.
Investigation UnderwayThe fire remains under investigation. No additional information is being released at this time.
The City of Battle Creek extends its sincere condolences to the victim's family and loved ones.
