Jimmy Kimmel Live! Returns to Air Amid Ongoing Affiliate Preemptions |
Despite Disney's reinstatement, major broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair continue to preempt the show |
Jimmy Kimmel Live! is set to return to ABC's lineup on Tuesday, September 23, following a suspension triggered by the host's remarks concerning the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a statement released on Monday, September 22, Disney explained, "We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."
The suspension, initiated on September 17, came after Kimmel's monologue addressed the political reactions to Kirk's death, leading to significant backlash and a warning from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
Despite the show's reinstatement, major broadcast groups Nexstar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting have announced they will continue to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on their ABC affiliate stations. This decision affects over 70 affiliates, representing more than 25% of ABC stations nationwide and reaching approximately 23% of U.S. households.
Sinclair stated that beginning Tuesday night, it would replace Kimmelâs program with news content on its ABC affiliate stations. Nexstar has also chosen not to carry the show, citing ongoing reviews of the situation.
The controversy has ignited a broader debate over free speech and political influence in media. While some view Disney's decision to reinstate Kimmel as a stand for creative freedom, others see the continued preemptions by Nexstar and Sinclair as a reflection of the complex dynamics between content creators and broadcasters.
As the situation unfolds, viewers are left navigating a fragmented media landscape, with access to programming varying based on their local affiliates' decisions. |
