MDOT Road Projects in Battle Creek, MI
Get the latest highway construction updates on the interstate rebuild

Drivers in and around Battle Creek are bracing for another season of significant highway construction updates as work resumes on a massive interstate rebuild project.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is restarting its multi-year, $335 million Marshall Modernization Project, a transformative effort impacting key local arteries like I-94, I-69, and M-96.
For many commuters, this means planning for inevitable delays and detours will once again become part of the daily routine.
Work is scheduled to ramp up again during the first week of March, signaling the second year of this ambitious undertaking.
This year's focus will be squarely on rebuilding the M-96 bridge over I-94 and reconstructing a critical stretch of I-94 itself, between F Drive North and Ackerson Drive.
Officials have confirmed that while two lanes of traffic on I-94 will remain open in each direction during most of the construction, drivers should anticipate intermittent full closures.
The long-term goal is to dramatically upgrade the region's infrastructure to support future traffic demands.
This entire overhaul is directly connected to the development of the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunity and Recreation (MAJOR) Campus.
A central feature of this new economic hub is the Ford BlueOval Battery Park, a facility expected to create thousands of jobs and fundamentally reshape the local economy.
The scale of the investment underscores the high stakes for both regional development and the daily lives of residents who must navigate the construction.
Further phases of the project include a complete reconfiguration of the I-94 interchange at M-311, also known as 11 Mile Road.
Additionally, crews will be converting a portion of M-96 into a modern boulevard, a change aimed at improving traffic flow and safety near the new industrial campus.
Looking ahead, work planned for 2027 will see the construction of a new M-311 bridge crossing I-94 and the final completion of the interchange and surrounding roadways.
While the project is centered in Marshall, the ripple effects on traffic patterns will undoubtedly be felt by anyone traveling from Battle Creek eastward along the I-94 corridor.
Residents are advised to stay aware of posted detours and allow for extra travel time, as the familiar orange barrels become a fixture of the landscape for the foreseeable future.
Patience will be essential as the region undergoes this period of profound, yet disruptive, growth.
This massive interstate rebuild project represents a pivotal moment for Calhoun County, promising enhanced infrastructure to match its growing economic footprint. |
