Michigan Recycling Coalition program turns boat plastic into composite decking and conserves resources
As Michigan boaters prepare to unwrap their vessels for the 2026 season, the Michigan Recycling Coalition (MRC) offers an environmentally friendly solution for disposing of plastic shrink wrap. The Recycle Run program provides a statewide recycling option that keeps this plastic film out of landfills.
Unlike standard plastic film, boat shrink wrap cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins. The Recycle Run program collects this material from marinas, boat shops, communities, and individual boaters across Michigan. The collected plastic is delivered to North American manufacturers and transformed into useful products like composite decking.
Program Details:
In 2025, Michiganders recycled more than 120,000 pounds of boat shrink wrap through this program. Each bag recycled delivers significant environmental benefits: approximately 13 gallons of oil conserved, 115 kWh of energy saved, and more than 16 cubic feet of landfill space preserved.
The Recycle Run program represents a partnership between environmental organizations, marine businesses, and Michigan communities. By participating, boaters support sustainable practices while preparing their vessels for the water.
Registration is available online through the Michigan Recycling Coalition website. Marine businesses and communities interested in participating can learn more about bag purchases, collection procedures, and scheduling.
