Sprout BC: Growing Food, Growing Community in Battle Creek

From gardens to grocery, this Battle Creek nonprofit is reshaping how our community eats.

Exclusive

When you think about food, it’s easy to focus on taste.

But for Sprout BC, food is about much more, it’s about access, community, and opportunity.

Founded in 2010 right here in Battle Creek, Sprout started as a grassroots effort to make fresh, healthy food more available to local families.

Since then, it has blossomed into one of the city’s most impactful nonprofits, reshaping the way we grow, share, and experience food.

Sprout’s early years were rooted in community gardens, with neighbors coming together to plant, tend, and harvest produce across the city.

From a dozen gardens the first year to dozens more the next, these small patches of soil became gathering places and sources of pride. Soon after, Sprout expanded into hands-on workshops, teaching cooking, canning, and urban farming skills to anyone interested in learning.

Today, Sprout operates as a regional food hub, collecting produce from local farmers and redistributing it to families, schools, and organizations.

Their SproutBox delivery service makes it possible for residents to get fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables delivered right to their doorsteps—a lifeline that proved especially important during the pandemic.

But Sprout isn’t just about food access; it’s about food opportunity. Their Incubator Kitchen provides an affordable, fully licensed commercial space where aspiring chefs, caterers, and food entrepreneurs can bring their ideas to life.

Beyond kitchen space, Sprout offers guidance with licensing, marketing, and business development, helping small food ventures grow roots of their own.

Health and wellness are also on the menu. Partnering with Bronson Battle Creek, Sprout hosts Nutrition & Wellness Pop-ups twice a month, offering free produce, health screenings, and nutrition education.

These events remind us that healthy living begins with healthy eating, and that both should be accessible to everyone.

Looking ahead, Sprout is preparing to launch its most ambitious project yet: Uproot Market & Eatery, a community-owned cooperative grocery and café.

Scheduled to open in downtown Battle Creek in spring 2025, Uproot will give residents direct ownership in a space that provides affordable fresh food, while also filling a long-vacant storefront with new life and purpose.

Sprout BC proves that food is more than fuel, it’s a way to build stronger neighborhoods, support local farmers, and empower entrepreneurs.

By planting seeds of change in Battle Creek, they’re growing something far bigger than vegetables: they’re growing community resilience and pride.
