Striking the perfect balance: Navigating creativity in a realistic world

Chapters 3 & 4 of How Successful People Think

This week, John C. Maxwell takes us deeper into the mindset of achievement with two essential thinking habits, Creative Thinking and Realistic Thinking.

When you learn to balance both, you unlock the ability to dream big and make those dreams work in the real world.

Chapter 3 – Harness Creative Thinking

Creative thinking fuels innovation. Maxwell reminds us that every great idea begins with curiosity and a willingness to question what already exists. Creative thinkers don’t say, “It’s always been done this way.” Instead, they ask, “What if we tried something new?”

He encourages readers to:

• Keep an open mind and welcome new perspectives.

• Spend time brainstorming without judgment.

• Surround yourself with people who inspire fresh ideas.

Creativity thrives when you give yourself permission to explore possibilities without fear of failure.

Chapter 4 – Practice Realistic Thinking

While creativity opens doors, realism keeps you grounded. Maxwell emphasizes that successful people don’t just dream, they plan. Realistic thinking helps you assess risks, identify resources, and prepare for challenges before they arise.

He suggests evaluating ideas by asking:

• What could go wrong, and how can I prevent it?

• Do I have the time, tools, and support I need?

• What specific steps will make this vision practical?

Realistic thinking transforms ideas into action. When paired with creativity, it creates progress that’s both inspired and sustainable.

Together, these two types of thinking help you imagine more, and achieve more, with confidence and clarity.
