The Final Step: Goals & Leadership

Wrapping up The Magic of Thinking Big

We have reached the finish line! This week, we cover the final two chapters of David J. Schwartz’s classic, moving from personal mindset to the practical tools of Goal Setting and Leadership.

Chapter 12: Use Goals to Help You Grow

Schwartz says it plainly: "A goal is a dream being acted upon." Without goals, we just drift.

He compares people to ships—without a rudder (a goal), you just float wherever the current takes you.

With a rudder, you can steer anywhere.

His advice? The 10-Year Plan.

It sounds daunting, but ask yourself: What do I want to accomplish in 10 years?

Once you have the big vision, work backward. What do you need to do in 5 years? 1 year? 1 month?

  • The 30-Day Improvement Guide: Break your big goals down into bite-sized, 30-day habits. Small, daily improvements compound into massive success.

Chapter 13: How to Think Like a Leader

Thinking big ultimately leads to leadership. Schwartz gives us four rules for leadership:

  1. Trade Minds with the People You Want to Influence. To get others to do what you want, you must see things through their eyes.

  2. Think: What is the Human Way to Handle This? People are not machines. Treat them with dignity.

  3. Think Progress, Believe in Progress, Push for Progress. A leader’s job is to set the standard for improvement.

  4. Take Time Out to Confer with Yourself. Leaders need quiet time to think. You can’t think big if you are always busy.

The Takeaway We’ve learned that belief triggers power, action cures fear, and our environment shapes our success. Now, it’s time to set the goal, take the lead, and make it happen.

Next Month’s Book: The E-Myth Revisited

Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It

We have spent the last few months working on our Mindset.

Now, it’s time to get to work on our Strategy.

For next month, we are reading the absolute "Bible" of small business success: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.

The Big Idea: Most people who start small businesses aren't entrepreneurs, they are "Technicians" suffering from an "Entrepreneurial Seizure."

They know how to do the work (bake the pies, fix the cars, write the code), but they don't know how to build a business.

This book will teach you the difference between working IN your business and working ON your business.

If you have ever felt trapped by your own company, or if you just want to build something that can run without you, this book is the blueprint.
