Vandalism Investigation Underway After Headstones Damaged at Sandstone Cemetery

Emmett Township Police probe possible vandalism at historic burial site

🔥 Trending

Emmett Township authorities are investigating potential vandalism at the historic Sandstone Cemetery following the discovery of damaged headstones.

On Friday evening, around 7 p.m., Heather Rocho, Chair of the Emmett Historical Preservation Committee, found three headstones damaged and another toppled over during her routine check of the cemetery.

Expressing her dismay, Rocho stated, "I was shocked on Friday. To me, this is unfathomable; this doesn't make sense to me... This should strike a chord with anyone in Emmett Township and it should strike a chord with anyone who is human. We all lose people, and to think we can't have a place to go and memorialize them without it being vandalized... that saddens me."

The Emmett Township Police Department (ETPD) is treating the incident as a possible act of vandalism. Chief Richard Mackey noted that if intentional, charges could include malicious destruction of property, given the high replacement value of headstones.

Sandstone Cemetery, established in 1835, serves as the final resting place for many, including settler and veteran John Harper.

Community members are urged to report any information related to this incident to the ETPD at (269) 968-9303 or anonymously through Silent Observer.

Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere; for instance, in May 2025, Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio, experienced vandalism where multiple headstones and a memorial bench were damaged, causing distress among families and veterans' organizations.

Such acts of vandalism not only damage property but also deeply affect communities by desecrating spaces meant for remembrance and reflection.
