Whitmer Champions Bipartisanship in Trump Country: 'Not One Party Has All the Answers'

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer embarks on a multi-state tour to rally Democrats and promote bipartisan cooperation ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently embarked on a multi-state tour, visiting regions traditionally supportive of former President Donald Trump, to energize fellow Democrats and advocate for bipartisan collaboration as the 2026 midterm elections approach.

Beginning on October 17 in Wisconsin's Jefferson County—a locale where Trump secured a significant victory in the 2024 election—Whitmer engaged with Democratic supporters, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation across party lines. She stated, "I think purple state governors are really important because we know not one party has all the answers, not one party has all the good ideas."

Following her Wisconsin visit, Whitmer addressed a rally in New Jersey's Bergen County, supporting U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill in her gubernatorial bid. The tour concluded in Florida, where Whitmer hosted a fundraiser for the state's Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County and participated in a roundtable discussion with local labor leaders in Florida's 26th Congressional District—a district where Republicans had a substantial lead in the 2024 election.

Whitmer's political aide highlighted the governor's commitment to competing in challenging areas for Democrats, noting her track record of winning gubernatorial elections in Michigan by double-digit margins and flipping Trump strongholds like Macomb County. The aide emphasized Whitmer's focus on "kitchen-table issues," such as her pledge to "fix the damn roads" and reduce costs for residents.

In her efforts to foster bipartisan cooperation, Whitmer has also been active within Michigan. In January 2025, during an address at the Detroit Auto Show, she underscored the necessity of collaboration between Democrats and Republicans to advance the state's economy and infrastructure. She remarked, "Every one of us swore an oath to the people we serve, and the people expect us to find common ground."

As the 2026 midterms draw nearer, Whitmer's proactive approach in both traditionally Republican and Democratic regions underscores her dedication to uniting diverse communities and addressing the pressing issues that affect all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
