Bodycam Footage Reveals Details of Battle Creek Teen's First Police Encounter

Bodycam footage has revealed new details about the first encounter between Battle Creek police and a 16-year-old teen at the center of a viral video that has sparked community concern and calls for investigation.

Jeremiah Spearman, 16, was walking down Jordan Street without shoes and with his hands in his pockets on June 4, 2026, when officers with Battle Creek's Gang Unit attempted to stop him.

What the Bodycam Shows

According to the footage, officers were responding to reports that Spearman had allegedly been chasing someone who had upset a family member. Officers can be heard saying Spearman initially ran from them, though that alleged interaction is not captured on camera.

"Come here, get your hands out of your pockets," an officer can be heard yelling to Spearman.

Officers grab the teen's arms, and he resists, leading to a struggle. An officer eventually wraps their arms around Spearman and tackles him to the ground.

"Oh my god, oh my f------ god I don't have nothing, stop," Spearman screams in the video.

An officer holds Spearman down with a hand on his chest, while the 16-year-old repeatedly tells officers he doesn't have any weapons on him. The teen is then seen crying in the footage.

"We're going to put handcuffs on you," an officer said while Spearman begs officers to take the handcuffs off.

"Take this s--- off me I just got slammed for no f------ reason bro," Spearman yells.

While searching the teen's pockets, officers try to calm him down. "Calm down, we'll talk," an officer said. "Calm down buddy."

Mother's Reaction

Martricia Spearman, Jeremiah's mother, told News Channel 3 that watching the video made her stomach turn.

"To hear my son crying out like that and to see his arms folded behind his back like he was a criminal just made me disgusted," she said. "It's got my stomach hurt."

What's Next

Both Martricia and Jeremiah Spearman are expected to meet with Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley, alongside representatives from the NAACP, next week to discuss both this incident and a subsequent viral video showing another encounter between Spearman and police.

News Channel 3 reached out to Chief Bagley asking why the teen was detained on June 4 and if his officers followed department policy, but had not yet received a response at the time of publication.

Community Context

The incidents have sparked broader conversations in the Battle Creek community about police interactions with youth, use of force, and concerns over racial profiling. The NAACP's involvement signals the seriousness of community concerns about the encounters.
