Convenience store employee severely injured after asking suspect to leave Pennfield Township business
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office is actively searching for a 33-year-old Battle Creek man accused of severely injuring a convenience store employee in an unprovoked attack Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred just before 4:05 p.m. on April 12 at a store located on Capital Avenue Northeast near Eaton Street in Pennfield Township. Deputies responded to reports of a fight inside the store involving an employee and a male customer.
Upon arrival, deputies found the store employee suffering from serious injuries, including what the sheriff's office described as a significant laceration to the abdomen. The suspect had already fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
According to the victim, the attack was completely unprovoked. The employee told deputies the assault occurred after he simply asked the suspect to leave the store. What began as a routine request escalated into a violent confrontation that left the worker hospitalized with severe injuries.
Investigators identified the suspect through surveillance video review and prior law enforcement contacts. This information also led deputies to locate the suspect's vehicle, which was found unoccupied approximately one and a half miles away on McKinley Avenue North.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office has submitted a warrant request to the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office charging the suspect with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Deputies continue actively searching for the 33-year-old Battle Creek resident.
Anyone with information about this incident or the suspect's whereabouts is urged to contact Lieutenant Curtis Smith at 269-781-0880. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by retail workers in our community and the importance of remaining vigilant. Local law enforcement encourages anyone with information to come forward to help bring the suspect to justice.
