Charitable Union's Initiative Bridges the Gap Between Unemployment and Manufacturing Careers |
For over two decades, Charitable Union has been a cornerstone in Calhoun County, providing essential support to individuals transitioning into manufacturing roles by offering free steel-toed shoes.
As the local manufacturing sector experiences significant growth, this assistance becomes increasingly vital.
In the past year, nearly 400 residents secured employment with the aid of these safety shoes.
Notably, 23% of these individuals were experiencing homelessness, 43% identified as female, 56% as people of color, and 5% became parents before the age of 19.
These statistics underscore the diverse challenges faced by our community members.
Teresa Allen, CEO of Charitable Union, emphasizes, "When people are working, our entire community thrives."
She adds, "These shoes aren’t just safety equipment—they are a bridge to stability, confidence, and economic mobility."
To further this mission, Charitable Union invites the community to become Shoe’ Gooders—supporters committed to helping local job-seekers step into new opportunities.
Ways to contribute include:
Organize a Workplace Drive
Encourage your team to collect new or gently used steel-toed shoes.
This collective effort can significantly impact someone's journey to employment.
Spread the Word
Share this initiative with colleagues, partners, and friends.
Every conversation can open doors to new opportunities within Calhoun County’s workforce.
Provide Financial Support
A donation of $55 equips one job-seeker with the necessary steel-toed shoes for their first day on the job.
Each contribution directly supports local hiring and economic mobility.
Donations can be dropped off at 85 Calhoun Street, Battle Creek.
In a time when manufacturing opportunities are expanding in Calhoun County, initiatives like this are crucial.
By becoming a Shoe’ Gooder, you play a direct role in empowering our neighbors to step confidently into their futures.
