Monday’s 71°F Peak Met by a Tuesday Snow Threat
Battle Creek enjoys a spectacular sunny stretch before a late-season chill brings a wintry mix

May’s Moody Transition: From 71°F Sunshine to an Arctic Encore
Battle Creek navigates a week of classic Michigan contrasts, featuring a record-threatening Monday followed by a slushy Tuesday surprise.
We are moving into the heart of spring, but the atmosphere hasn't quite finished its tug-of-war with winter.
This week in Battle Creek is defined by a slow, sunny climb into the 70s, only to be interrupted by a sharp cold front that brings a rare late-season snow threat.
The first half of the week is the highlight for anyone looking to get outdoors.
From Wednesday through the weekend, we’ll see plenty of sunshine as temperatures steadily rise from the high 50s into the mid-60s. Monday is set to be the "gem" of the stretch, with clear skies and a beautiful high of 71°F.
It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on yard work or enjoy the blooming scenery throughout the city.
However, keep the winter gear accessible for Tuesday, May 12th. A sudden "May Surprise" arrives as temperatures crash back to 60°F during the day and plunge to a brisk 36°F at night.
While we’ll see light rain for most of the day, there is a 25% chance of snow mixing in during the morning hours.
It’s a stark reminder that in the Cereal City, spring always likes to keep us on our toes!
Cereal City Weather Q&A
Q: With Monday hitting 71°F, is it finally safe to plant my sensitive annuals? A: Not quite yet, Stu! While Monday is beautiful, Tuesday’s low drops back to 36°F with a chance of snow flurries. That "May Surprise" could lead to patchy frost. It’s better to wait one more week or keep your pots ready to move indoors for Tuesday night.
Q: Is the 25% chance of snow on Tuesday, May 12th, unusual for Battle Creek? A: It’s definitely rare! While Michigan is famous for late-season snow, seeing flurries in the second week of May is an outlier. The warm ground means it won't stick to the roads, but it’s a frosty reminder that winter lingers.
Q: How windy will it be during that Monday-to-Tuesday transition? A: We’ll see a shift to southern winds at about 9 mph on Tuesday. While not a major windstorm, it will usher in enough moisture to keep things feeling damp and chilly compared to the dry sunshine over the weekend. |
