Michigan Declared 100% Drought-Free After Record Spring Rainfall

Michigan has officially reached a major milestone in its fight against drought conditions. For the fourth consecutive week, the entire state remains completely free of drought, according to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor. This marks the first time in over a year that no part of Michigan has experienced any level of drought.

The recovery is especially significant when compared to last summer, when more than two-thirds of the state was classified as parched. Today, Michigan stands as one of the few states in the nation to be 100% drought-free, a testament to the above-average precipitation that has characterized the spring of 2026.

Branch County Sees Dramatic Turnaround

Branch County has been at the center of this wet weather pattern. The region officially cleared its long-term moisture deficit in early April, and the rainfall has not stopped since. By mid-April, the area had already recorded 5.79 inches of rain, nearly two inches more than the typical average for the entire month.

Some locations within the county reported rainfall surpluses of three to four inches above normal. As of this week, year-to-date rainfall in Coldwater has reached 15.07 inches, significantly exceeding the normal year-to-date average of 10.10 inches.

This dramatic turnaround has pushed statewide topsoil moisture to a significant surplus, a stark contrast to the beginning of the year when nearly the entire county was classified as abnormally dry.

What This Means for Local Farmers and Residents

The end of drought conditions brings welcome relief to local farmers who struggled through last year's dry spell. Full rivers and replenished groundwater reserves set the stage for a promising growing season across Calhoun County and the surrounding region.

For residents, the drought-free designation means reduced fire risk, healthier lawns and gardens, and stable water supplies for the summer months ahead.
