Urban Crust Pizza Brings Fresh Ingredients, Great Crust and Friendly Service to Springfield

We tried Urban Crust Pizza on Dickman Road for this week’s local restaurant review, ordering two very different pizzas and cheesy breadsticks during the busy dinner hour. From the first phone call to the last bite, this locally operated pizza shop gave us plenty to talk about.

For this week’s restaurant review, we headed to Urban Crust Pizza, located at 4317 W. Dickman Road in Springfield, Michigan.

We placed our order by phone right around the busy dinner hour. The young lady who answered was upbeat, friendly and helpful from the start. We were quoted about 30 minutes, which seemed perfectly reasonable for that time of night.

Our order gave us a chance to try a couple different sides of their pizza.

My daughter ordered a Meat Lover’s pizza with stuffed crust, adding onions. I went with a Supreme, removing the green peppers and adding jalapeños, along with a garlic Parmesan crust. We also added an order of cheesy garlic breadsticks.

I arrived a little ahead of the quoted pickup time. There was a sizable order being picked up ahead of ours, with other customers coming in as I waited. Our pizzas ultimately took about five to seven minutes longer than the original estimate, which was certainly understandable considering the large order.

.

What impressed me was how the situation was handled.

The staff remained extremely friendly, and the young lady working up front even offered me a two-liter drink while I waited. I declined because we already had plenty of drinks at home, but the gesture was appreciated.

They also made sure we had marinara to go with our breadsticks.

Then We Tried the Pizza

Before my daughter even took a bite of her pizza, she tried a piece of the sausage by itself.

“You need to try this.”

She was right.

The sausage was particularly flavorful and stood out compared with the sausage I've had from many other pizza places.

Then there was the crust.

It had a great flavor and was cooked just right, with a nice crispness without being overcooked, dry or soggy.

My daughter was particularly impressed with the stuffed crust. She pointed out that stuffed crust can sometimes become soggy from the oils in the cheese, while other times the cheese inside isn't completely melted.

She said Urban Crust got it right.

The cheese was completely melted, but the crust wasn't soggy at all. She also thought the different meats on her Meat Lover’s pizza had excellent flavor.

Fresh Toppings Made a Difference

My Supreme was generously topped, and the ingredients tasted fresh.

One small detail really caught my attention: the jalapeños were freshly cut, not the typical sliced jalapeños from a jar.

The mushrooms also appeared fresh, and there was no shortage of toppings on the pizza.

The sauce was flavorful, and the garlic Parmesan crust added another layer of flavor without overpowering everything on top of it.

This tasted like a pizza where attention was being paid to each part of it, from the crust and sauce to the meats and vegetables.

Don't Skip the Cheesy Breadsticks

Our cheesy garlic breadsticks were another winner.

The order included eight pieces, with plenty of cheese, and they paired nicely with the marinara provided by the restaurant.

It was a substantial side to go along with two already generously topped pizzas

Our Take on Urban Crust Pizza

One of the things I enjoy about doing these restaurant reviews is finding local places that give people another choice beyond the big national pizza chains.

Urban Crust Pizza is one of those places.

The ingredients tasted fresh, the pizzas were generously topped, the crust was excellent, and both of the specialty crusts we tried were prepared very well.

Just as importantly, our experience with the people was positive from the beginning. The friendly phone service happened before anyone knew we were there to do a restaurant review, and that same welcoming attitude continued when we arrived.

Would we recommend Urban Crust Pizza to others?

Absolutely.
