Battle Creek Sets Fall Leaf Disposal and Winterization Dates

Battle Creek residents have several leaf disposal options as city Public Works crews winterize parks and prepare public spaces for the 2026–2027 cold-weather season.

Crews are shutting down irrigation systems, drinking-water spigots, fountains and splash pads to protect plumbing from freezing temperatures.

Those park water features are expected to return in late spring 2027.

For leaves, residents can mulch them into lawns, compost them at home, use the city’s curbside yard-waste collection or take them to Brice Pit.

The dates matter because curbside collection and the city drop-off site will close for the season on different schedules.

Unlimited curbside yard-waste collection for city residents continues through Friday, December 4th, 2026.

Leaves and grass clippings should be placed in an approved bag or container and set at the curb by 6 a.m. on the regular collection day.

Residents using Brice Pit at 715 West River Road will see new hours beginning Monday, November 2nd.

The site will open Mondays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesdays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Brice Pit is closed on weekends and holidays and will close for the 2026 season on Friday, November 20th.

The drop-off site is free for City of Battle Creek residents and accepts leaves, grass clippings, ornamental grasses, brush and tree limbs.

Bagged material must be placed in biodegradable paper yard-waste bags, while plastic bags, trash, food waste, rocks, metal and construction debris are not accepted.

The city’s Brice Pit information video explains how residents can use the facility.

Mulching leaves directly into a lawn can help retain moisture, protect soil and suppress weeds.

Composting them can also produce nutrient-rich material for gardens and landscaping next spring.

Burning leaves is prohibited within Battle Creek city limits.

Residents should not rake or push leaf piles into streets or onto sidewalks because city street sweepers are not designed to collect concentrated piles.

Large piles can damage sweeping equipment and slow normal street-cleaning work.

The seasonal transition also brings renewed attention to snow and ice preparation.

Residents can review the city’s snow-removal priorities, follow named plows through the SnowPaths tracking portal and use winter water tips to reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

When does Battle Creek curbside yard-waste collection end?

Weekly curbside collection continues through Friday, December 4th, 2026, on each household’s regular collection day.

When does Brice Pit close for the season?

Brice Pit closes Friday, November 20th, 2026, and is expected to reopen in spring 2027.

Can Battle Creek residents burn or rake leaves into the street?

No. Leaf burning is prohibited within city limits, and residents should keep leaf piles out of streets and off sidewalks.
