I really want people to feel comfortable understanding their diagnosis. I try to take my time with my patients and answer any questions they may have. I want them to feel informed. That helps the patient make the best decision concerning their healthcare.

I think one of the most important aspects of care is to really take time to sit with the patient and connect with them. I try to answer all of their questions by giving them the time they need. I want them to know that we’re going to be with them as we work our way through the specific situation they are dealing with.

When a patient leaves my office, my goal is that they feel listened to and that they understand what is going on with their health. Surgery can be very scary and I believe the more information you can share with a patient, the better they’re able to deal with it and get through the process.

Dr Sonnabend has always appreciated the patient-doctor relationship. She chose endocrinology so she could have an opportunity to build long-standing relationships with patients and treat their chronic conditions. She enjoys all aspects of endocrinology and has a special interest in treating diabetes. One of her favorite aspects of helping patients is getting to know them and learning about their unique stories. Her biggest influences in life have been her parents, both of whom are physicians. They have served as key examples, showing her the importance of helping others and making a difference. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, family and friends. She also enjoys cooking and traveling.

Growing up and being inspired by his mom working in a healthcare setting, Joel chose to become a physician assistant (PA) in order to become a member of a team that promotes good health and wellness to a variety of patients in a variety of different settings. He believes surgery in particular offers the opportunity to take a problem and see it through to its resolution. In his free time, Joel enjoys spending time with family, reading and also enjoys sports. I think it is very important to understand exactly what brought the patient in to be seen. I like to fully characterize the patient’s concerns and allowing that to guide further evaluation/treatment.

Dr Ver Steeg learned early in his life what a difference plastic surgery can make in someone’s life. One friend with a cleft palate was helped by a plastic surgeon. Another friend received care after a lawnmower accident. He credits his grandfather with instilling a sense of hard work and drive that has helped to guide him through life. Additionally, Dr Ver Steeg finds the field of plastic surgery quite intellectually stimulating. Encountering problems not found in a textbook, he has to weight the different options and come up with the right solution for problem at hand. Dr Ver Steeg has a special interest in reconstructive surgeries including facial trauma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer surgery and wound care.
